Coster Copenhagen and Sustainability

STYLE & FASHION

Sustainability

Coster Copenhagen focus on preserving and rebuilding for the future and want to ensure that as a company they really do make a difference and pursue transparency and honesty. Therefore, instead of supporting large scale organisations, they strive to find and chose CSR projects on their own. Projects and initiatives which they can track and visit themselves, ensuring both effort, time and money spend being all worthwhile. CSR is important to Coster Copenhagen and that fact that the fashion industry is now the second most polluting industry worldwide, makes them pursue every opportunity to discover new methods throughout their value chain, in order to minimise their carbon footprint, becoming more eco-friendly and contributing to a greener, more sustainable and ethical sound industry. Since the brand was founded, Coster Copenhagen have always had a great focus on the working environment at the production places and do a lot of research before they start a production, meeting the culture in the respective places. In addition, they visit all of their manufacturers and partners at least twice a year to get an overview of the topics in relation to responsible production.

Seawool

Seawool is made from recycled plastic bottles derived from the oceans, grinded into powder with the help of oyster shells sourced from the food industry. Finally, natural upcycled cotton fibres are added for maximum softness. Seawool only leaves a minimised carbon footprint and in addition provides a wide range of performance and comfort benefits. These include a soft woollen touch, insulating warmth and wrinkle resistant. Seawool dries quickly and has anti-static properties as well as stopping odour in a natural way. Seawool garments therefore stay fresh for longer, preventing unnecessary washing, all improving the lifespan of each garment. Coster Copenhagen produce Seawool knits that are timeless and classic in expression, ensuring they last and transcend seasons. 1 kilogram of Seawool approximately reuses 60 plastic bottles.

Recycled Polyester

Primarily, Coster Copenhagen prefer to use natural fibres such as viscose, modal and cupro in their products. Instead, if they chose to use polyester, they primarily use recycled polyester in its pure form. They mainly use recycled polyester that comes from the sports industry. The excess substance is melted and re-extracted into new fibres which can then be woven and become recycled polyester.

Hand knitted

In many production countries, women must travel far and leave their families and children to work in the production companies. Therefore, Coster Copenhagen have activated a project that goes beyond the large production factories. Instead they have their knitwear produced directly in the rural villages of North China where the women live. This results in some super beautiful and unique hand knitted knit styles, each of which is signed on a wash label inside the garment by the respective woman who has knitted the piece. A piece for your collection that you can truly treasure knowing that you are contributing to a project that is giving these women a real opportunity to stay with their families and children while working and earning money.
